Training of Trainers "Visual Facilitation for Trainers" (Chisinau, November 24-27, 2016)

When all the activEco, activePeace, ClimateLaunchpad and Harap Alb seminars are finished, when the main events for 2016 are over - then it is the time to prepare for the next year!

On November 24-27, 2016, there were two important events for active activEco alumni. First, on November 24, the EcoVisio facilitators pool meeting took place, dedicated to consolidation of trainers' community (mostly composed of activEco alumni), discussions and decisions. It was open for all the facilitators, including the new ones, and the potential ones as well.

But then, on November 25-27, there was a larger meeting - the first, and highly anticipated Training of Trainers on "Visual facilitation of seminars and artscribing", held in the frames of multipliers' program of Dialogue for Change. The training, conducted by Maxim Pijevskii and Julia Knyupa, gathered facilitators from the EcoVisio facilitators pool and their fellow colleagues - facilitators from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

The training was made possible thanks to EcoVisio and Інша Освіта / Insha Osvita.

Planting Good Deeds in Bubuieci II, November 19, 2016

On November 19, 2016, the Seed It Forward team and its friends, activEco alumni from all parts of Moldova and locals, gathered together for the second edition of the Planting Good Deeds in Moldova action - on the same place where the campaign started in 2015, in village Bubuieci, Chisinau municipality.

In comparison to last year, this action was much smaller, but also much more engaging and effective. 54 volunteers - half of them locals! - planted a live hedge of about 570 seedlings, continued work on the tree nursery (planting about a hundred future oaks), and savored the first tours, which allowed many people to get acquainted with the process of creating a park, and to become aware of their contribution to its prosperity.

This was the culmination of the past thirteen months of rehabilitation of a former landfill in Bubuieci - to be contiued!

To see more photos, find out more about how it was done and how you can take part, you’re welcome to visit Seed It Forward website - or the photo album on Facebook.

Razeni, Ialoveni district, by Moldovan diaspora in collaboration with the local public authorities of village Razeni, NGO "Eco-Razeni" and social enterprise "Floare de cireș”.

The School was a pilot project with a goal to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and know-hows from diaspora to those who are still in the country, and vice versa. Thus, the course was based on lectures and talks delivered by experienced activists and entrepreneurs, practical activities, coaching sessions and networking, all of those happening around 5 working hubs: Plastic Recycled Fantastically; Responsible Consumption; EcoBag; Reflecting, Protecting, Saving; and Paper 2RE: REcycled and REused. As a result, the participants developed five initiatives in these areas, with a potential to transform into social projects or social enterprises.

Movie night: "The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces" (July 27, 2016)

On July 27, 2016, activEco alumni, with support of Association Oberliht, held yet another documentary movie night - at Flat Space, ”The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces” by William H. Whyte.

Filmed in New York and finalized in 1979, the movie is still relevant for many cities, including Chisinau. Being part of one of the most renown researches in the domain of urbanism, the film attracts the attention of its viewers to the interaction between human nature and built environment, and gives ideas of how city planners and designers can encourage and allow the creation of spaces people will actually want to use.

In order to make the film (originally in English) accessible for the general public, the organizers of the event - Iurie Nuca și Alexandru Munteanu - took upon themselves translation of the film and creation of Romanian subtitles.

You can find out more about all of that on the event's page on Facebook.

activEco alumni strategic meeting: "Active and Sporty"; Cosnita village (July 10-11, 2016)

On July 10-11, 2016 there was the first ever activEco alumni strategic meeting in the four years of program existence, gathering 20 young people from Moldova and Ukraine. As the topic of the meeting was “Active and Sporty”, they first had some fun doing sports, like playing volleyball, and throwing an american football and frisbee around. However, the meeting was also dedicated to finding new methods of work inside the alumni network in order to keep it strong and proactive. And last, but not least, there was some productive time of sharing experience with the participants of the activEco 2016 Project Management Seminar, which still have some months and things to do before becoming alumni themselves.

You can find more photos from the event on activEco Facebook page.

The Fifth THK coordinators' meeting in Moldova (June 22-26, 2016)

On June 22-26, EcoVisio had the great honor of hosting the Fifth Annual Meeting of coordinators from the non-formal education programs of the Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg network. The largest gathering ever - 70 people from 29 countries, from Berlin to Krasnoyarsk and from St. Petersburg to Cairo, marvelous exchange of practices, stories, ideas and inspiration - all under the topic of Sustainability!

And though the organizational team of the meeting was strong, the event still wouldn't be possible without the active involvement of our alumni, coming from Chisinau and regions in order to take part in the meeting as coordinators, but also to support the organization of the City Rally, EcoVisio visit, etc. and making the foreigners' stay in Moldova as enjoyable as possible. If we go on like this, it might be possible to host the grand MitOst festival here in Chisinau in a few years!

You can find more photos from the meeting on EcoVisio Facebook page: 1) general meeting, and 2) visit to the EcoVisio headquarters.

The First Maker Day Chisinau; June 4, 2016

The idea of a co-working space in technology and creative industries, which came to two young engineers while they were participating in activEco-2015, is growing in size. On June 4, 2016, the Atelier 99 team organized the first Maker Day ever in Moldova, which was part of the European Maker Week, supported by the Technical University of Moldova, USAID Moldova and ZIPhouse. Now, they are equipping a small workshop for hosting the first Community of Makers and work on their big plans for the future.

You can find more photos from the event on the Atelier 99 / Fablab Moldova page on Facebook.

Capacity-building training for coordinators of non-formal education programs, Binz, Germany (June 2-6, 2016)

In between June 2-6, 2016, there was a big capacity-building meeting for the coordinators of non-formal education programs from all over the MitOst network. Two trainings were running in parallel in Binz, Germany: one on organizational development and another on SMART PR.

As the Moldovan team was informed, they were quite many from Moldova. But what could they do, if everyone had a right to be there - various coordinators of Harap Alb, activePeace and activEco? And all three activEco alumni, Ion, Veronica and Gabi, were engaged in intense exchange of experience and new ideas' development while learning how to adequately present their programs to the public. It's one thing when young people already become participants and experience our seminars - some of them still get lost, but most are looking forward to the next events. How to capture and keep them until they go to the first seminar? How to reach out to the regions?

There definitely were lots of impressions and ideas, thanks to amazing trainers Katharina and Malwina, to the environment around and to fellow coordinators from numerous countries. The time will only show whether they'll be able to grow and bear fruit.

You can find more photos on EcoVisio Facebook page.

Campaign "We Win When We Recycle", Balti, March-May 2016

In between March - May 2016, with help of the Peace Corps Moldova volunteers and with support of the ”Caroma Nord” Association, the Resource Center for Environmental Education ”Green School” and the ”EcoVisio” Association (represented by activEco alumnus Petru Vinari), in Balti, the first edition of the "Câștigăm când reciclăm” ("We Win When We Recycle") competition took place. In the framework of this project, pupils became the protagonists of the recycling idea, and the teachers of the communities on the topic of waste management. This process demonstrated to the pupils themselves, as well as to their parents, teachers and the whole communities that 1,045 kilos of plastic and 28,700 kilos of paper can be transformed from waste to recyclable materials... and its value - 43,019 MDL can be a significant contribution for schools. Thus, we sincerely congratulate Balti community and hope that this example will be able to inspire other regions of the country as well. Together, we can!

You can find more about the project on the "Câștigăm când reciclăm” Facebook page.

Chiscareni youth plants their future! (Chiscareni, April 2016)

In April 2016, a team from village Chiscareni, Singerei district of Moldova, led by activEco 2015 alumna, Tatiana Panaguta, participated in the national competition ”Plantează-ți viitorul!” (”Plant Your Future!”) organized by the National Environmental Center, and focused on restoration / creation of river protection stripes. Gaining the support of local lyceum, local public authorities, foresters and a land engineer, Tatiana and her team planted 2550 saplings of willow and white poplar on the river Middle Ciuluc.

On May 15, 2016, when the intermediate finals of the competition took place - the great final was planned for Autumn 2016, when it will be possible to calculate the survival rate - Chiscareni team was awarded the 2nd place - out of 60 teams from all over Moldova, who, all together, planted over 75,000 trees. Unfortunately, many of them died because of the drought - and the fact that the competition took place late in the season, - but this huge mobilization is promising.

You can find more information on the blog of Tatiana's colleague, Mihaela Ungureanu ("Planting 391 poplars" and "Chiscareni team got the first place in the competition "Plant Your Future""), on the infoportal Civic.Md, or on the website of the host initiative "Love Your River" (in Romanian).

Keep Cool Together, Ukraine & Moldova, 2016

The activEco's love towards the climate warming game, Keep Cool, doesn't cease. The international team of activEco alumni and EcoVisio members has improved and translated it into Russian, Romanian and Ukrainian, in order to make it accessible for the people of Moldova and Ukraine who do not know English or German; published the new versions and is now teaching more and more multipliers to use it as a method of non-formal education. Topics like geopolitics, climate change, conflict management and economics are all included!

The project is supported by the MitOst alumni grants program, EcoVisio Association and British Council in Ukraine.

You can find more photos from the training on Khata-Maysternya Facebook page.

Open FLEX and activEco alumni tree planting action - willows on Raut river (April 8-9, 2016)

As the spring went on, it was already too late to plant most of the trees - but it is difficult to stop planting, and so we did it again, with willow, which is such a marvellous tree that it can be planted almost whenever you want - of course, the survival rates vary, but still, its growing potential is amazing. We were glad to explore it, again, in the framework of the "Sustainable Development - Big Vision, Small Steps" project, together with FLEX alumni and Seed It Forward's support. The planting event took place at Raut river near villages Ohrincea and Coacăza Roşie, the place where one of our fellow alumni, Sasha Nikitin, resides. It was a great place where we could find both donor trees to cut the branches-future-trees, and more than enough "naked" river banks to plant them.

Just cannot stop exploring afforestation possibilities in our country!

You can find more information and photos in Sasha Nikitin's album on Facebook or on the Seed It Forward's website.

Open FLEX and activEco alumni Tree Planting Action - Hazelnuts in Elizavetovca (March 12, 2016)

A cloudy spring day, 20 volunteers, 1 tractor with a driver, 1 ha of land and 450 hazelnut seedlings - such was one of the first actions within the project “Sustainable Development – Big Vision, Small Steps”, realized in partnership between FLEX and activEco alumni. The project was based on a series of events, including planting actions, supported by the Seed It Forward team. The first planting event took place on March 12, 2016, by the village of Elizavetovca, Ungheni district, where the apiary of our colleague, founder and administrator of the “Dulce Plai” social enterprise, is located. Thus, the hazelnuts will become a great gift not only for the local community and the biodiversity, but also for the bees – it blossoms very early, in February-March, and produces lots of pollen – main source of protein for bees at this period, when the bee families most need it.

We were very happy to make this present hand in hand with volunteers from EVS and Peace Corps, as well as with other friends-activists.

You can find more photos in Sasha Nikitin's album on Facebook, or on the Seed It Forward website.

The Forum of Environmental NGOs of Moldova, December 18-19, 2015

The end of 2015 was also marked by the national Forum of Environmental NGOs (18-19 December), attended by around 100 civil society representatives from Moldova and abroad, as well as some companies and media.

The official goal of the event was to review the country's progress in the field of environmental protection (especially in the contest of European integration) and the current state of our environment, to discuss the barriers, challenges and possibilities met by our environmental NGOs, as well as strengthen cooperation among them.

Beside its informational value, the Forum truly was a good possibility to meet with our friends and partners, both present and possibly future ones, and to understand better the role of EcoVisio, its projects and initiatives.

You can find more photos and info about the event here.

Planting good deeds in Bubuieci, November 14, 2015

In the autumn of 2015 two activEco alumni got involved into the leading team of the “Seed It Forward” initiative, working on the grassroots reforestation of Moldova. Their first action took place on November 14, 2015 in the village of Bubuieci, Chisinau municipality. It involved about 400 volunteers from different localities, organizations and backgrounds – and, of course, the activEco community, represented by over 20 alumni from 2013, 2014 and 2015.

All together, we have planted about 2000 of trees of over a dozen various species – and not just on a simple field, but on a former landfill. It wasn’t easy, it won’t be easy – but we’re planning on transforming this aggrieved piece of land in a park, something much needed in that area. And we do believe it is possible.

To see more photos, find out more about how it was done and how you can take part, you’re welcome to visit Seed It Forward website.

MitOst Festival, Ivano-Frankivsk, September 23-27, 2015

On September 23-27, 2015 a big activEco & EcoVisio delegation has gone to Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine in order to take part in the 13th edition of the yearly MitOst Festival. Apart from enjoying the city, useful workshops, interesting presentations and great concerts, it was a perfect possibility to get to know like-minded people from other educational projects and programmes, as well as countries. And, as it was the first really international event where a significant number of activEco alumni from different years have participated as a big group, it was also a wonderful team-building experience, what with a long trip by bus and all the exploring.

You can find more impressions from the event here.

Upcycling for community park, Riscova village, July 25, 2015

Again in Riscova with Eco-Village to join hands with passionate local youth Eco-club in building a community park. There is certainly a lot of work to do, but right now the focus was on making benches & tables from recycling materials: old fences, tires, pallets and other “waste”. activEco participants and alumni, locals and other volunteers worked hard to give life to a place where people will spend time, meet with friends and get inspired for new upcycling projects!

Movie night “I AM”, July 21, 2015

On July 21, 2015 the first EcoVisio movie evening took place, centered about the philosophical and motivational movie “I am”. The evening was held at the Library of Arts “Tudor Arghezi” in Chisinau, and served as a meeting point for a number of activEco alumni from all three programme years, as well as for other like-minded people, who socialized, networked and participated in the discussions about the movie. Planting Paulownia at Rezeni, July 18, 2015

On July 18, 2015, activEco alumni and current participants took part in the Paulownia Planting Action. It sounds strange to be planting trees in summer, but everything was followed with a guidance of the ones experienced in this field, so we trust everything to be fine. It will be a great asset for the village, because paulownia trees are well-known for their growth speed, resilience, quality of wood and of biomass, as well as for the capacity to combat soil erosion. There was a lot of work to do, from marking, cleaning the field and digging holes to the planting, watering and other small issues. So, the desire to swim in the Rezeni lake remained just a wish; however, it was a day everybody enjoyed. The only problem was, the night came too soon!

Game Evening, EcoVisio Headquarters, July 15, 2015

On July 15th 12 activEco participants tried to save the climate through negotiation - in the framework of the "Keep Cool". "Keep Cool" is a climate negotiation role play game designed and written by climate scientists in order to demonstrate the complexity of climate negotiation. The players find out why it is so difficult to reduce emissions: you are pushed by your economic target and maybe even by a lobby at home. However, thanks to big volcano eruption at the beginning and big investments in innovation, the world made it and the "Former Soviet Union" won the game. Also remarkable: by the end, China was the strongest economy based purely on renewables.

A nice side effect of this event: many alumni got to know the EcoVisio headquarters and the squirrel room with lots of things to share (and bring them back!). One more side effect: lovely Georgian, vegetarian Xachapuri prepared by Valeria’s mother.

The game is still only in German and English. We are working on a translation and hope that next year's activEco generation will be able to play it in Romanian/Russian/Ukrainian.

Plastering Workshop at Eco-Village, Rîscova, July 4, 2015

On 4th of July there was another, long-awaited visit to Riscova - full of new people, new skills and, overall, happiness. Eco-Village, together with Earth Safe Design, were organizing a plastering workshop, teaching everyone interested how to finish walls with only natural materials (clay, sand and lime, as well as pigments), which allow the house to breathe, serve as an antiseptic and have many other remarkable features. All volunteers got a chance to try that, and also make some adjustments to the organic garden they helped plant two months before. Some of the greenery could already be harvested and was used in the traditional great vegetarian lunch, as well as offered to the participants as a present to take home.

Iarba Urbana 2 (May 23, 2015)

Alumnae of activEco 2014, Maria Popova and Anfisa Voitenco, have gone on with the second edition of their initiative, Iarba Urbană. Supported by many volunteers, including other activEco alumni and current participants of the Program, they cleaned up a part of the territory of the Valea Morilor park, on the rear part of the House of Nationalities, painted and adorned it with pictures and ornaments on the walls, provided it with benches and trash bins made of recycled materials, and planted some flowers.

All the work was concluded on May 23rd, 2015, when the actual Iarba Urbana event took place, bringing together various social projects and environmental organizations, offering visitors a possibility to relax in nature’s lap in the middle of the city, enjoy open cinema and diverse master-classes, all in the friendly atmosphere accompanied with live music.

More photos and other impressions you can find on the event page, on the page of Iarba Urbana on Facebook, and also in media: 1 (before the event) and 2 (after). And from Chisinau is ME video "Field of Dreams" and Iarba Urbana Festival.

Planting Day at Eco-Village, Rîscova, May 2, 2015

On May 2, a big group of alumni and other volunteers came to the first Eco-Village master-class of 2015, striving to make this place greener in the framework of the Planting Day. Meanwhile, they found out about the difference between hybrid and heirloom varieties, about how to combine plants to boost their growth and protect the soil, as well as about when and how to plant in our gardens. These and many other questions were answered, and great green synergy was born during this practical planting seminar in Eco-Village, the results of which will be felt by visitors and residents of Rîşcova in the months to follow.

On July 5, 2014 we have participated in Eco-Build Day at Eco-Village. Together with Eco-Village team we have learned the basics of eco-construction: some participants participated in designing, others brought back to life an old window from the former building, by removing old noxious paint from its frame. Also, together with ApaSan project, we focused on constructing a temporary composting toilet. If you are interested to learn more about the technology we used and to watch video on composting eco-toilets already built in Moldova, please visit: www.wisdom.md and www.apasan.md.

Alumni joining "The Coalition for the forest-park Riscani" on 11th March 2014

Since the beginning of this year until March 2014 about 400 trees at Rişcani park in the capital were cut under the pretext of hygiene cutting. Trees like maple, oak, birch, spruce, pine, elm, poplar and willow were completely excised from green park zone. To combat the massive deforestation of the Park and the threat of the construction of private swimming pools and saunas, many locals and volunteers from different organizations like Gutta-ClubNational Environmental Center and Ecological Movement of Moldova gathered to restore the area by planting new trees.
